Jill Scott is the only child from her mom Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia the state of Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. The family was also dominated by her grandmother. She grew up being an all-single child. Scott was a graduate of The Philadelphia High School for Girls. She then enrolled at Temple University. While working two job opportunities, Scott also studied secondary teaching in Temple University. Her dream was to become a English teacher at high school. She was unable to fulfill the dream after studying for three years while working as a teacher assistant, she left college. She started her career as a spoken word artist, performing her own work at live poetry readings and eventually linked up to Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. The two wrote You Got Me together. At an Roots concert, she came out in the spotlight as an artist. In the following years, she managed to secure collaborations such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She gained more experience on stage as she was a part of the Canada tour of the Broadway production Rent. The label signed her as its first artist.
